Demone Smith
Of Note: Councilmember Smith actively worked against the passage of domestic partnership legislation for the City of Buffalo in 2010. The legislation, which passed with Smith as the only dissenting vote, established a domestic partnership registry for the City of Buffalo, and extended partner benefits to all city employees in registered, same-sex partnerships. Mayor Byron Brown refused to sign the legislation into law; however, the legislation was passed with a veto-proof majority which allowed its passage. In 2011, Smith endorsed Republican candidate Christopher Jacobs for Erie County Clerk, over the pro-equality Democratic candidate, Maria R. Whyte.
